Medicare question
What Is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January to March)?
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan and want to switch plans in early 2024, this is your chance. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31 each year. During this time, you can change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another or return to Original Medicare.
Where this answer comes from, and what it can't tell you
Written from the published Medicare rules and the source material preserved for this question. It explains the topic in general terms. It is not a reading of your own coverage documents, not a prediction of how Medicare or a plan will decide a case, and not advice about a particular plan. Your current notice, policy, Evidence of Coverage, or formulary controls when it differs from a general explanation. Resting Sycamore is not Medicare.gov and is not endorsed by any government agency.
Who Can Use the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?
Medicare Advantage, often called Part C, is an alternative way of receiving your Medicare benefits. Instead of getting coverage through Original Medicare (Parts A and B), which are provided directly by the government, you get all your healthcare services from a private insurance company that has been approved by Medicare.
This includes hospital stays, doctor visits, and sometimes additional benefits like prescription drug coverage, vision care, and dental care. Some plans even offer wellness programs and fitness memberships as part of their package.
Why Might Someone Change Coverage During Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment?
The January to March period is one of the few times during the year when you can switch your Medicare Advantage plan without waiting for other enrollment periods. There are several reasons why you might want to make a change:
Reasons for making a change can include a drug leaving the formulary, a doctor or hospital leaving the network, new cost sharing, a move, or a change in the services you use. Extra benefits such as dental or vision may also change. Compare the current plan with the proposed plan using the Summary of Benefits, Evidence of Coverage, provider directory, and formulary for the applicable plan year.
How Can You Change Coverage During Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment?
Changing your Medicare Advantage plan during the Open Enrollment Period is straightforward, but it requires some planning and research:
Review your current plan's costs, benefits, network, and drug list before making a change. Use Medicare's Plan Finder to identify plans available to you, then check each plan's current Summary of Benefits, Evidence of Coverage, provider directory, and formulary. Compare premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, maximum out-of-pocket limits, prior-authorization rules, and coverage for your doctors and prescriptions.
4. Enroll by March 31: If you decide to make a permitted change, submit it by March 31. Coverage generally starts the first day of the month after the plan gets your request.
What Should You Review Before Making an Open Enrollment Change?
While changing plans during this period can be beneficial, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Timing: Make sure you have enough time to review all options and enroll before March 31.
Coverage transition: Do not cancel coverage separately. Make the permitted enrollment change and confirm the first-of-the-next-month effective date in the plan notice.
Special Needs Plans: Some people with specific conditions or circumstances (like being disabled) can qualify for Special Needs Plans. These plans are designed to meet the needs of certain groups and might offer more benefits than standard Medicare Advantage plans.
What Happens After a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Change Takes Effect?
From January 1 through March 31, a person already enrolled in Medicare Advantage may make one permitted change: switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare, with the option to join a Part D plan. The effective date and available choices follow Medicare's current rules. Keep the confirmation notice and verify when the old coverage ends and the new coverage begins.
